About T-UK Chester Taekwon-do Club
Chester Taekwon-do Club was established in 2005 by Mr Jonathan Emm (now 5th dan) and Miss Orla McKenna. They ran the club as joint instructors for about 18 months, until Miss McKenna moved abroad and Mr Emm took over as the sole chief instructor. Since then, the club has produced many black belts.
Mr Emm teaches most of our classes, assisted by our team of qualified black belt instructors, the most senior of which is Mrs Katharine Shuler (3rd dan). We also have some junior teaching assistants, who help our instructors in the kids' classes. Mrs Shuler leads our 'TKD mini-Gladiators' classes for our youngest members (4 - 7 years).
We are one of the most established martial arts clubs in Chester, with classes in Handbridge and in Upton. We have full, international recognition for our instructors and black belts, with the International Taekwon-do Federation (ITF), as established by the Father of Taekwon-do, General Choi Hong Hi. The picture at the top left of this article is our ITF club registration plaque, in Mr Emm's name. This recognition and ITF affiliation ensures that our technical knowledge is second to none, coming directly from the ITF's technical committee of Masters and Grand Masters.
Our classes include a full range of techniques, including technical detail, patterns, pad work, physical workouts, self-defence techniques, free sparring, destruction (breaking boards) and theoretical knowledge. This ensures that our members get an excellent fitness workout, as well as developing flexibility, realistic self-defence ability, mental strength, confidence and knowledge. Taekwon-do has been scientifically proven to provide all of these benefits and it is great fun too.
Our students have had great tournament success, winning many medals and trophies. Our members have even won a few international tournament medals, including a TKD International World Championship gold. The tournaments that we attend are categorised so that members of any age and grade level can take part and compete against comparable opponents. We also train with our friends in T-UK and ITF, including our local, Trident group of clubs led by Master James Miley (7th dan), where there are more World and European champions and medallists to train with.
Finally, Chester Taekwon-do has a very good social aspect to the club. As one of our members, you will make great friends and we try to ensure that we organise a few social events each year, for both kids and adult members.
